People Do What You Pay Them To Do


If someone's bonus is determined by the amount s/he can cut costs, then costs will get cut. Even if it means not paying employees .
Of course, all the companies mentioned in this article have policies prohibiting such behavior on the part of managers. But when a manager is told, "Don't pay overtime or you're fired," and, "Don't shave your employees' hours or you're fired," is it any surprise that managers choose to shave hours?

Either way the manager runs the risk of getting fired. But when told to do an impossible task (more work than is possible with the allowed payroll), at least shaving hours gives the manager a chance to get away with it.
