Ongoing has an interesting analysis of the way running AdSense ads effects an author.
I think he's pretty much on the money. For my part, I'm not going to do things like go back to partial RSS feeds to drive the ads up. As long as I cover my hosting expenses (and a cuppa joe every few months) I'm happy.
