Free speech vs. Security

This isn't new, but here's a good summary of presidential security taken to an extreme.
It's one thing to protect the President from harm, but quite something else to protect him from harmful ideas.

What ever happened to the notion that citizens have the right to peaceably assemble and petition their government for a redress of grievances? Isn't protesting exactly that? What's the point of a protest if the protest can't be seen by anyone who matters (media or politician)?

It would be interesting to see what would happen if one of these cases made it to the Supreme Court, but they all seem to get abandoned at the lower level.
