Response from MYOB

Just received a response from MYOB about my earlier complaint. As I expected, they simply provided platitudes about the problems of piracy, without offering any real solution to (or even understanding of) my concerns about the risks of losing my accounting software.
Here is the text of MYOB's response:

I am sorry you feel this way about the need to activate your software. With the amount of global piracy these days MYOB as a company needs to protect itself from piracy of the software. Without having some protection on our software, you can today find our software for free here in the US on the Internet and on CDs being sold in other countries. This isn't about not trusting our customers not to give software to a friend. The concern is about those who upload our software to the Internet to be shared with millions of people, as well as those who create CDs and sell them on the black market in other countries, which is a serious problem. Knowing this, we have attempted to prevent this in a way that has minimal impact on our customers, but provides some protection from piracy globally. You can also think of it this way. ItÂ’s not just people stealing from software vendors, but they are also affecting you. With lost revenue due piracy or the added expense of trying to close down black market operations, we waste resources that could be better used on building a better product and providing a better service for our customers.

Fortunately we are not the only ones who require registration/activation of software even for those who are upgrading their software. We did, however, take a different approach by not tying the software installation to a specific computer. We are asking customers instead to activate their company file for use with the new software.
