An Unconventional View of the Politics of the Capture of Saddam Hussein

Most people, even Democrats, think that the capture of Saddam Hussein is good for Bush and bad for the Democratic candidate in next year's election.

And they're right. But that's not the whole story.

The Democrats should be glad that Hussein is now in custody.
Look at it this way: Capturing Hussein now, almost a year before the election, means that whatever short-term boost Bush gets will be long gone by next November.

On the other hand, if he was still at large, there's always the risk that he would be caught, say, two weeks before the election. That would almost guarantee a Bush victory, no matter what else had happened in the interim. This way, the risk is gone.

Now the Democrats just have to worry about that other guy getting caught just before the election. You know, what's-his-name, the evildoer with the scraggly beard.
