Everyone is anticipating that Apple will announce a mobile phone today, probably in partnership with Cingular (as reported in the Wall Street Journal).
I'm having a hard time getting excited. The mobile phone business just doesn't seem conducive to Apple-style "it just works." The customer service stinks, coverage is often spotty, carriers have a vested interest in selling phones with too many features so they can sell add-on services, and the result is a complicated customer-hostile mess. I'd be happy to be surprised. But I've come to the conclusion that the problems with the mobile phone business are structural, and not even Apple can fix them.
