Tuesday - August 10, 2004 at 08:35 AM in2 Terabyte memory card? Don't get your hopes up....
There's been a number of news snippets about the Taiwanese getting ready to announce a new kind of memory card called a ucard (that's the greek letter "mu," not the letter "U"), to be announced in October. The thing that gets people's attention is the 2 terabyte capacity. That's 2,000 gigabytes.
Whoa, pardner! Before you get too excited, read this web page a little more carefully than the other breathless commentators. See the 2 TB number? That's not the actual capacity of the card, its the maximum capacity of the format. Just like a Memory Stick Pro, a ucard can hypothetically hold 2 TB, if someone can figure out how to cram that much on the card. In other words, we're not talking about any massive breakthrough in storage technology. All this is is a new physical card specification (like Compact Flash) which can be used to hold up to 2 TB if the technology ever advances that far. Posted at 08:35 AM | Permalink | | | |
